The next step

What's next? For many young men this is the question they find themselves asking when they reach the end of their attendance in a residential program.

Northwoods is happy to offer an answer to this question with our transitional program. Young men sometimes do not yet possess the knowledge or skills to survive in the reality of adulthood, and while a residential program can assist in building these skills and developing the needed confidence, the responsibility becomes far more real when they are faced with paying their own bills, renting an apartment, attending college courses, and maintaining employment.

At Northwoods we work with these men to help them step by step utilize the skills they have gained while in the residential program and put them into action in the real world. Each step of our program allows them more independence while increasing their own financial responsibilities.

Below you will find a brief description of the available transitional services. Note: Students will only be placed in a service that is deemed appropriate by Northwoods.

30-day Intense Transitional: Students relocate to the Ranch and begin an intense leadership based programming. They will be given greater responsibility and oversight of projects. This process will allow assessment and building of their vocational skills and get them ready for the next steps required for independent living. We begin job searching during this step, once employment has been achieved, students are ready to move into Step 1.

Apartment Living (Step 1, 2, 3): Here, students are required to hold employment, go to school, or both. Once they receive their first paycheck, they begin taking on their own grocery bill, gradually increasing their responsibility, while families financial responsibility decreases. This allows the student to begin to develop confidence in their independence without the overwhelm that can lead to failure.

Ongoing Maintenance: Ongoing support can be a great benefit. As problems arise, it is great to have those you trust and have built rapport, there to guide you. In this service we do just that, offering 24hr emergency phone contact, monthly meetings with a provider, community support staff, and of course the chance to visit and adventure with us.

All of these services can be discussed in more detail and any questions answered as we reach toward your family members independence.
